NAVIGATION PAYS OFF FOR ETHERINGTON

...Favourite backers were biting their nails in the Weatherbys Insurance Maiden Fillies' Stakes when Arbella was worn down following a protracted duel with Rill.

The pair were inseparable for much of the last furlong and a half but the photograph showed Rill and Dane O'Neill to have prevailed by a head.

Rill (5-4 favourite) is trained by John Gosden, who was represented by his assistant Daniel Harrap, who said: "She's a nice filly who has had some niggling problems which explains why she hasn't run until now.

"She would have been a little ring rusty and with a bit of luck should improve on that." James Nicol, who has trained winners in the United States from his base in Newmarket, took the Choices Insurance Maiden Handicap with Arctic Cove (11-1), Ted Durcan's mount proving two and a half lengths too strong for Maria Delfina.

DIAGNOSIS: Ovarian cancer

...It was not unusual, I was told, for Mother Nature to go into overdrive this way before shutting down the female reproductive system entirely.

Other women I knew were dreading menopause, but I couldn’t wait.

After nine months of shots, my symptoms were as bad as ever, my weight ballooned, and I felt terrible.

In early 2000, my gynecologist ordered an ultrasound, mainly to check the position of fibroids, benign growths often associated with extensive blood flow.

As a precaution, she also removed uterine tissue and ordered a biopsy, which was negative for cancer.

That was a relief, but in truth, I wasn’t worried, as I had almost no family history of cancer.

My standard line was: “We’re heart attack people.” In fact, my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 70s.

But since she had taken hormones for 30 years, and her cancer was caught at the early “in situ” stage, I didn’t think it had much relevance for me.

What I didn’t know at the time was that my mother’s father had died of colon cancer, not a heart attack, which raised my risk.

I had gained quite a bit of weight on the hormones, so initially, I was pleased as the pounds dropped off after I stopped taking them.

I chalked up my growing fatigue and occasional shakiness to “getting older.” I wasn’t too concerned that anything was seriously wrong until early December 2000.

I woke up one Sunday morning feeling nauseous and flu-ish, but wasn’t going to let that...

The class-certification hearing began in Wilson’s courtroom in Little Rock on June 1 and last convened June 24.

It is one of several pretrial motions he is handling for hormone-replacement drug cases nationwide.

In the suit denied class status, former J.-based manufacturer, falsely advertised the benefits of the drug and failed to communicate its risks.

During the hearing, Wyeth’s attorneys called on two medical experts who testified that the Women’s Health Initiative study’s findings were more limited than at first reported in 2002 and that they would still prescribe the drug.

The hearing did not intend to determine the merits of the study or the claims of women who’ve used Prempr...
